TREPAC Fundraising

There’s no end to the ways you can raise funds for TREPAC, but you must always follow applicable laws. If you have any doubt about the legality of your event, contact TREPAC staff.

Here are some events to consider:

Events with prizes (must include a game of skill)

Pay to Play

Admission pays green fees to play in PAC golf tournament. A TREPAC investment enters players in a closest-to-the-hole, longest drive, or other competition. Winners receive a prize. Include silent or live auctions for additional PAC dollars.

Admission goes to TREPAC

Texas REALTORS® pay to play in the TREPAC golf tournament; admission fees count as investments. Sponsors or local TREPAC dollars cover the overhead Additional TREPAC investments give attendees a chance to enter a closest-to-the-hole or longest-drive competition, etc. Winners receive a prize. Include a silent or live auction for additional TREPAC dollars.

Carnival Event

Use activities from the popular TV show “Minute to Win It” for a fun and easy way to raise dollars. Texas REALTORS® buy tickets (a TREPAC investment) for chances to compete in skill-based activities, like balloon darts, cup stacking, or a dunking booth. Winners of these skilled events get prizes.

Events Without Prizes

Outings

Examples: boat excursion, a night at the theater, mystery bus tour, a night at the ballpark

Donated attraction

Attraction, for example, a boat, is donated for event as an “in-kind” PAC contribution. Sponsors or local TREPAC dollars cover food, beverage, and entertainment. Texas REALTORS® pay admission, 100% of which can go to TREPAC. Include silent or live auction for additional PAC dollars

Poker/casino night (play for fun)

Texas REALTOR® pays admission to attend. All admission monies go to TREPAC as investments. Tournament is for fun (absolutely no prizes). Attendees can pay for additional chips. Include silent or live auction for additional PAC dollars.

Can hold a separate poker tournament during event, subject to certain rules: Only Texas REALTORS® and their spouses may play in the poker tournament. The location of the poker tournament cannot be open to the public and, regardless, cannot be held at a bar or restaurant. Tournament players cannot be required to pay general admission to the casino night event in order to be eligible to enter the poker tournament. Texas REALTORS® may enter the poker tournament by paying a separate entry fee (“tournament buy-in”). All entrants must have an equal chance of winning, except for the advantage of skill and luck; therefore, must provide all entrants with equal amounts of chips and cannot provide opportunities to buy additional chips. All of the tournament buy-in money, which is kept separate from TREPAC money, is distributed to the poker winner(s).

Date Auction

Have individuals volunteer to be auctioned off for a date or services (cleaning, cooking, etc). Texas REALTORS® buy tickets as TREPAC investments and place tickets as “votes” in buckets of the individuals who are being auctioned off. The volunteer with the most tickets is subsequently auctioned off, with proceeds going to TREPAC.

Movie night

Invite Texas REALTORS® to movie night or a private pre-screening. REALTORS® pay admission to attend. Charge regular price and a VIP price—VIP gets you pre-party access and early seating. Include silent auction to raise more dollars.

Watch party

Invite Texas REALTORS® to watch a special event, like election returns, inauguration ceremonies, or the Super Bowl. Texas REALTORS® pay admission to watch event, make PAC investment to enter, say, a cook-off contest. Invite celebrity judges to pick the cook-off winners. Include silent auction to raise more dollars.

Contributions are not deductible for federal income tax purposes. Contributions to the Texas REALTORS® Political Action Committee (TREPAC) and the Texas Association of REALTORS® Federal Political Action Committee (TAR FedPAC)—which makes contributions to the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC)—are voluntary and may be used for political purposes. The amount indicated is merely a guideline, and you may contribute more or less than the suggested amount. You may refuse to contribute without reprisal, and the National Association of REALTORS®, Texas REALTORS®, and its local associations will not favor or disadvantage anyone because of the amount contributed. Until the RPAC annual goal is met, 70% of an individual’s contribution goes to TREPAC and may be used to support state and local candidates; the remaining 30% is sent to TAR FedPAC to support federal candidates and is charged against your limits under 52 U.S.C. 30116. (Exception: 100% of an individual’s contribution goes to TREPAC if the individual is an employee of an affiliate member of Texas REALTORS®.) After the RPAC annual goal is met, 100% of an individual’s contribution goes to TREPAC and may be used to support state and local candidates.
